As it has been for many years now, once every moon, or near enough, the enemy will come to raze our lands. You, reading this manuscript now, are the watchman, being sworn to defend us from them.
I will now describe the incantations you must perform to drive away the enemy.

In the Soldier’s Helmet in the watch-post, you will find the Link. It is a small metal box which fits in your hand. At the start of every incantation, raise the Link and strike it three times rapidly against the side of your head, above the ear. Then, press your thumb against the small golden circle, so that it is pushed inwards. Keeping your thumb so pressed, raise the Link to your mouth and speak into it.

If the enemy approaches through the valley to the east, say:

Blackstar blackstar this is ground,
Request kinetic strike on thermal targets,
Reference point blue,
Fire until targets are destroyed,
Out.

If the enemy comes over the river from the north, speak thus:

Blackstar blackstar this is ground,
Request kinetic strike on thermal targets,
Reference point white,
Fire until targets are destroyed,
Out.

If the enemy comes across the plain to the south, recite:

Blackstar blackstar this is ground,
Request kinetic strike on thermal targets,
Reference point gold,
Fire until targets are destroyed,
Out.

If the lookouts fail and the enemy is among us - pray that this does not come to be - say:

Blackstar blackstar this is ground,
Request danger close fire mission,
Reference point black,
Authorise tactical nuclear weapon release,
Confirm danger close targeting,
Out.

Then gather every person you can, and leave at once, running as fast as the wind to the mountains. Do not look back and do not go back.

You all know me, of course. Many have you have known me since I was only a knight in the service of the great Lord Cannock. Some of you have known me still longer, though in the interest of preserving my dignity, I hope none of you recall my adventures from that time.

As you have known me, as knight and as Lady of the Rock, I hope I have demonstrated my desire to only do right by others, to defend you, dear citizens, and to uphold our rights and laws as you the people deem fair. I hope I have succeeded in those goals. I hope I have not made any stains upon the honour of this throne.

But I know that I cannot - must not - rule forever. It is not right, and it is not in my nature. The stars call to me, and while I have gladly put my duty to you above that call, it must still be answered one day.

As I think you may now suspect, that day has come. In two weeks’ time, I shall step down from the throne of Cayd Rock for the last time.

I know that you have called me your Summer Queen. I know you may think now that with me, so goes the summer. You may rest assured, though, that I have given this matter my greatest attention these past months. There is no quarter left unguarded through which the cold breath of winter may creep, and I know that my successor will be as vigilant and strong as I have been, if not more so.

On that note, I wish to name the lady whom I have chosen to take my place. You may expect the Lady Yansi Kuro, the Bronze Eagle, who has been my fearless hand for many years - but I have spoken at length with Lady Kuro, and she assures me it is her wish to remain in that role and give the new queen the full strength of her support.

Instead, as my successor to the throne of Cayd Rock, I name the Lady Kassarine Bauer, the Light of Yellow Bay. Lady Bauer has made her wisdom and resolve plain in my service. I believe she will make a fine queen.
