New Warsaw

New Warsaw is a large, Earthlike planet in the New Visegrad system. With its dense cloud systems and off-centre orbit, the planet experiences long, gloomy winters, although usually of the rainy type rather than snowy. There are a few moderately-sized seas, but otherwise the majority of the surface is occupied by low mountains, steppes, and tundra, dotted with boreal forests.

History

As the first planet colonised by humans in the system, New Warsaw is the most heavily populated, with a number of major cities including the regional administrative centre, March City.

During the War of 4404, there was fighting on New Warsaw as local groups attempted to overthrow the planet's Galactic Defense League government. However, aside from a couple of raids against orbital facilities, forces from the Andromeda Alliance were unable to reach the system, and the rebellion never gained a substantial foothold.

After the War, though, was when the planet found itself in more serious danger. In 4409, the Cossus Incursia's attacks in Cygnus included landings on New Warsaw, which resulted in heavy fighting on the surface. Fortunately, Core Governance forces were already arriving in the system, planning to use it as a staging ground to respond to other nearby attacks. The defenders were able to prevent the Incursia from reaching the planet's urban centres.

Follow-up Incursia attacks, including outbreaks from hidden cells dispersed during the original landings, continued to be a problem for several more years. The locals gained a reputation for their hardy spirit despite the danger.

Ecology

The planet is home to a variety of life, both native and imported. Equinoids and deer roam the steppes, stalked by felinid predators such as the frost puma. In the forests, there are birds and cats, as well as numerous varieties of insects.

Cold-blooded creatures are scarce on New Warsaw, due to the generally chilly atmosphere and lack of sunlight. A few hardy types of lizard are known to inhabit the immediate vicinity of the planet's few volcanoes, warming themselves around the caldera and in the volcanic springs.

Habitation

Human settlements here tend to be built on exposed hilltops. Although similar locations have historically been chosen for defensive reasons, on New Warsaw, this is mainly to avoid the low-lying fog that tends to accumulate in other areas, as well as for easier access to wind power.

The capital, March City, is located on a windswept promontory jutting out into the Zegrze Sea, near the equator.
