Oroki's World

Oroki's World is a medium, icebound planet in the Korwitz system. Its temperatures are on the lower edge of human habitability, but it has a breathable atmosphere and can currently support life. It is notable for having been flash-frozen from an earlier warmer state, resulting in a layer of frozen water clouds encapsulating the planet.

History

Researchers believe that at some point in the distant past, Oroki's World was actually moved, instantly, from a closer orbit around Korwitz to its present distance. This would go some way towards explaining the apparent flash-freeze effect. During early explorations, the first human to land on the planet, Jonathan Oroki, discovered a Staiide starship embedded in the clouds. Later analysis of the ship suggested it may have suffered a catastrophic malfunction of its jump drive, or perhaps been involved in an ill-advised experiment, resulting in it taking the entire planet with it when it jumped. However, this remains only a theory. Critics insist that such a movement, while having a dramatic effect on conditions on the planet, would not have caused a freeze fast enough to actually freeze the clouds in the sky solid.

An alternative theory has been proposed, in which the ship still suffers a catastrophic malfunction, but rather than the planet being moved, it is the “shock” of the ship jumping into the atmosphere in an unusual manner which drains the thermal energy from the planet. This theory would notionally result in a much faster freeze. On the other hand, attempts to induce such an effect in experiments have been fruitless.

Habitation

Because of the frozen clouds covering everything, it is difficult to access the surface, and building permanent structures on top of the clouds is both awkward and mostly pointless. A few scientific outposts are maintained to study the clouds, the frozen jungle below, and the scattering of Staiide artefacts found in the system.
